Basic Tips On How To Train Your Parrot.

by Roshan R Prasad

Parrots are wild animal. It takes a lot of time and patience to make the bird feel like you are their friend, but once you do it will be much easier to tame.

Once the parrot is at your home, it is important that he be around people who love birds and that he stay in his cage for at least the first 24 hours. If the parrot appears nervous, slow down and allow it more time.

If you cover all the windows and mirrors and leave the cage door open, the parrot will emerge from the cage when it is ready to. If the bird does not emerge soon, you may be able to lure it out using some food or a branch. In order to protect yourself from snags, take precautions to ensure your hair is out of the way and wear clothing that will not snag easily.

Never raise your voice when speaking to the parrot. It is always important to remember that you must not look directly at him as this is behavior which will lead him to view you as a predator.

Place some clippings in its cage if your parrot is reluctant to hand feed. It will be much easier to get the bird to eat out of your hand if you encourage and praise him whenever he eats.

In order to exercise their wings, parrot’s will need to fly occasionally. If you feel that the bird is still scared, then try using a bird stand that is fairly low and a couple of sticks with different lengths so that you can carry the bird around. Its best to have two sticks so the parrot is able to move around. Use slow, steady moves to avoid scaring the bird.

Domesticating a parrot can be quite trying during the first weeks. As soon as you have seen some better behavior, basic commands can now be taught. By instructing your bird in this manner, it will begin to understand that you are the boss and he will then come to you at all times in good situations and in dangerous ones so that both of you can be safe.

Another command they should learn is “no”. Sometimes, the parrot may do something that you do not appreciate and by teaching this to the bird, they won’t do it again.

It will take time and patience to tame the bird. You will be able to teach your bird to speak certain words and possibly even sing once the bird is able to trust you.
